Dualism.<\/strong> The view that two ultimate and irreducible principles are necessary to explain the world, and evil in particular. Opposite of monism.<\/p>\n

Emunah.<\/strong> Faith.<\/p>\n

Halachah.<\/strong> Literally, “the Way,” the legal parameters of Judaism.<\/p>\n

Kabbalah.<\/strong> The esoteric teachings of Judaism and Jewish mysticism, especially the forms which it assumed in the Middle Ages from the twelfth century onward.<\/p>\n

Man of Halachah.<\/strong> Jewish religious man of reason (note: our term diverges slightly from Soloveitchik’s definition of Halakhic Man<\/em>).<\/p>\n

Masorah.<\/strong> Corpus of Jewish canon and explication; thus, the body of authentic tradition connected with the biblical text.<\/p>\n

Midrash.<\/strong> A particular genre of rabbinic literature incorporating biblical exegesis, explanation of biblical texts from an ethical and devotional point of view (including related sermons delivered in public), and forming a running commentary on specific books of the Bible.<\/p>\n

Mitzvah<\/strong> (pl. mitzvot). A Divine ordinance\/ precept in the Halachah.<\/p>\n

Monism<\/strong> (from Gr. mones,<\/em> “single”). The view that everything can be reduced to one singularity or principle.<\/p>\n

Talmud.<\/strong> Composed of the Mishnah and the Gemara, the Talmud essentially records the exegesis, debate, discussion, and conclusions involved in the illumination of the Oral Law, as opposed to a totally literal reading of the Pentateuch. There are two Talmuds: the larger and more comprehensive Babylonian Talmud (Talmud Bavli)<\/em> and the smaller Palestinian Talmud (Talmud Yerushalmi)<\/em>. In the absence of a qualifying description, the term Talmud generally refers to Talmud Bavli.<\/p>\n

Tanach.<\/strong> Acronym for Torah\/Nmeeim\/Kesuvim<\/em>, (Pentateuch, Prophets, Writings), the three divisions of the Hebrew Bible.<\/p>\n

Tefillah.<\/strong> (Jewish) prayer.<\/p>\n

Theodicy.<\/strong> The problem of reconciling God and religion in the face of evil or (an attempt at) reconciling God and religion in the face of evil.<\/p>\n
