213 <\/sup>The phrase Eheyeh Asher Eheyeh<\/em> is commonly translated in the present tense, I-AM-THAT-I-AM. Note, however, that the literal and simple trans- lation (peshuto) <\/em>is future tense, as we translate it. Onkelos maintains the future tense, and Rashi’s translation is clearly future-oriented- “I will be with them during this travail, as I will be with them in future travails.” The main thrust of Nehama Leibowitz’s explanation (in Studies in Shemot, <\/em>p. 60) is also future- oriented. She cites Psalms 9 1 :5, “I will be with them in trouble.”

effect a declaration that the holiest state of the holy is God of Potential. God is the actualization of potential in its conscious holy form. All that we know of God’s universal name is that which it stands for: holy potential within potential within potential ad infinitum<\/em>. For the infinite God of Israel is a God of willed potential.<\/p>\n

Holy potential is more than human potential writ large. “To whom will you liken Me that I shall equal?” (Isaiah 40:25, cf. 46:5). Holy potential transcends time, space, and the cosmos. Holy potential tracks to the forward wave of the cosmos, to the forward wave of time. Embedded within it are thus potentialities rippling infinitely forward, embedded within infinite con- centric circles cycling outward to infinity.<\/p>\n
